ASAM e.V. Adopts Standards for Highly Automated Driving

The standardization organization ASAM e.V. will adopt several standards for the Validation of highly-automated driving. OpenDRIVE® is the first Standard that has now been transferred into ASAM. It constitutes the new ASAM standardization domain „Simulation” and will be continued under the name of ASAM OpenDRIVE. The standards OpenCRG® and OpenSCENARIO® will follow within the next months. The transfer of these standards into ASAM ensures their independent, long-term development and maintenance in a professional setting. At the same time, it allows ASAM to position itself in the area of highly automated driving.

Hoehenkirchen, Germany – September 10, 2018 – The future of highly automated driving requires standardization. This is the unanimous message from industry and research that is promoted in publicly and privately funded projects and pushed in national and international working groups. Many new standards are currently under development in open, loosely organized working groups.  

In order to ensure a reliable further development of their standards, a number of these working groups have decided to transfer their specifications into the professional standardization organization ASAM e.V.  


OpenDRIVE® is the first Standard that has been transferred into ASAM. The Standard defines a Data Model for the highly accurate, logical description of road networks. It is used for vehicle and traffic Simulation and serves to functionally validate driving situations and driving maneuvers. OpenDRIVE® is going to be continued under the name of ASAM OpenDRIVE. 


In a next step, the standards OpenCRG® (description of road surfaces) and OpenSCENARIO® (description of dynamic contents in driving Simulation applications) will follow. Their transfer is about to be closed. Further working groups have also indicated interest in transferring their specifications into ASAM.


The core team around OpenDRIVE® has decided for that step to ensure an independent, long-term development and maintenance of the Standard in a professional setting. The contract has been signed by ASAM and VIRES Simulationstechnologie GmbH thus assigning their rights to ASAM. The present core team around the initiating companies VIRES Simulationstechnologie GmbH and Daimler AG comprise about ten companies who have participated in the development of this Standard since 2006. Many more companies apply this Standard in their tools. 


Marius Dupuis, managing director of VIRES Simulationstechnologie GmbH describes this decision: “OpenDRIVE is entering a new phase and will evolve from a ‘de facto’ Standard to an official one. In ASAM, we have found an organization which will continue the development of the Standard in a professional and effective manner. ASAM’s international presence will also help growing the international user base rapidly.”

The ASAM OpenDRIVE kick-off meeting will take place on Oct. 09 – 10, 2018. The first release of this new Standard is expected for end of 2018. The Standard will be accessible on the ASAM webpage ( free of charge. The first activities on ASAM OpenDRIVE will be open for all interested parties. Participation in working groups to further develop the Standard will require an ASAM membership.
