On the Way Towards Safe and Autonomous Driving - How Can Big Data Help to Achieve this Goal

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Lars Hannawald
Chair Vehicle Technologies

The detailed investigation of traffic accidents is certainly an important tool in the development of vehicle safety. Since the 1970s, many in-depth studies, such as the German In-Depth Accident Study (GIDAS), have been carried out and the large amounts of data have been made available for research and development of vehicle and traffic safety. These databases provide substantial insights into the accident initiation, the crash performance of the participating vehicles, and, last but not least, the vulnerability mechanisms and patterns that have occurred. However, can these databases also help to achieve the goal to drive safe and autonomous? The lecture provides an overview of methods and development tools and explains the use of Big Data applications with regard to the development of automated driving functions.
