Synchronized Mobility

Dr. Torsten Gründel
Head of Department Intelligent Transport Systems
Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI

Inspired by the synchronized movements of birds, fish and other animals, the intelligent transport systems of the future will use various forms of synchronization to increase the traffic density of existing infrastructures, accelerate traffic flow and optimize multimodal transport chains. The idea of a perfectly synchronized transportation network, in which automatically controlled vehicles meet at crossroads without traffic lights and move through traffic collision-free at full speed, seems to be a distant vision still. However, many of the necessary vehicle technologies and infrastructural requirements are already available or under development. This presentation provides an overview of the current research activities addressing the demand for automation across all levels of individual vehicles to infrastructure and traffic centers. A special emphasize will be put on the ongoing projects of the Saxon “Synchronized Mobility 2023” initiative.
