For Level 3 autonomous vehicle systems, the vehicle will automatically detect the boundary condition where control must be transferred back to the human driver. When the vehicle requests the human to take over the driving task – what is the sequence of events? How fast and how well can the driver take control? Paper studies were conducted with driving simulators, but the simulated results varied significantly. What are the reasons for these variations? This is where this presentation begins.
Dr. Schittenhelm will present how his company has analyzed these studies and refined the test design for a more consistent and reproducible results. He will report how Daimler has conducted experiments, with varying driving scenarios (mostly focusing on urgency and system boundaries that lead takeover request for driver action) that ultimately lead to an improved driver model for Level 3 systems.
