The release of ASAM OpenMATERIAL 3D 1.0.0  marked an important milestone in standardizing the description of physical material properties and 3D model structures for more accurate simulations. However, not all relevant features could be implemented within the initial timeline. This new project continues the work, focusing on high-priority topics that remained open after release 1.0.0.

Topics may include:

  • Support for binary lookup tables to reduce file size and optionally conceal detailed material data
  • More detailed support for lighting and emissive materials
  • Add a top-level $schema field for schema validation
  • Best practices for exporting from Blender (and likely other tools)
  • Clearer documentation
  • New checker rules to improve consistency and error detection
  • Better support for conductivity modeling and converting measured reflectance into BRDF
  • Handling thickness for transmittance calculations
  • Enabling scene composition / referencing / instancing of assets
  • Support for LODs for humans / complex assets
  • Integration ideas with OpenSCENARIO DSL

We’re aiming to keep all enhancements as backward-compatible as possible so that tools built against 1.0.0 will continue working. If we do need to make breaking changes, those will be reserved for future major versions.
