The Autoware Foundation

Academics

The Autoware Foundation (AWF) is a global non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the development and deployment of open-source software for autonomous driving. Founded in 2018, it brings together industry leaders, researchers, and developers to co-create a neutral and trusted ecosystem for safe, scalable, and intelligent mobility. The Autoware Foundation hosts and supports Autoware, the world’s leading open-source autonomous driving software stack, providing all the core functionalities needed for autonomy in a modular and extensible architecture designed for real-world deployment across diverse vehicle types.

Functionalities
Autoware is the world’s first open-source software stack designed specifically for autonomous driving. Built on ROS 2 and developed by a global community of engineers and researchers, Autoware provides a complete end-to-end architecture for autonomy—including perception, localization, prediction, planning, and vehicle control. The platform is modular, scalable, and hardware-agnostic, enabling seamless integration across a wide range of autonomous mobility applications, from research vehicles to commercial robotaxis, shuttles, and industrial platforms. With robust libraries, state-of-the-art algorithms, and a rapidly evolving ecosystem, Autoware accelerates development and reduces the time and cost required to build safe autonomous systems. Autoware is openly available under the Apache 2.0 license at github.com/autowarefoundation/autoware.

Blueprint
Functionalities
Open AD Kit is the first SOAFEE Blueprint, co-developed by the Autoware Foundation, SOAFEE, and the eSync Alliance (as well as various industry collaborators) to demonstrate how autonomous-driving software can be modularized, containerized, updated, and deployed across heterogeneous vehicle and cloud compute. By using Autoware as the primary workload, Open AD Kit enables composable autonomy pipelines, OTA-updatable subsystems, mixed-critical orchestration, and scalable development workflows—providing a shared foundation for building software-defined, continuously evolving autonomous vehicles. Open AD Kit Blueprint is available in the SOAFEE in Action web page https://www.soafee.io/blog/2025/openadkit-blueprint/
