Combining the reference-line-based ASAM OpenDRIVE with OGC's CityGML represents a transformative approach to road space modeling for advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving. While ASAM OpenDRIVE is effective for road descriptions, it encounters challenges when dealing with complexity and detailed environmental data. Conversely, CityGML excels in 3D city modeling, offering rich semantic and geometric data, but it lacks detailed road logic.

Industries involving landfill, construction, agriculture, and mining are also looking to deploy or have already deployed highly automated driving functionality. There is a strong overlap in the use cases for ASAM OpenX standards across on-road ADAS/AD and these domains. This project aims to investigate potential extensions to current ASAM standards to support the development and testing of highly automated driving functions for off-road vehicles.
