Initial Situation

The number of ECUs in vehicles steadily increases and their interdependencies become more and more complex. Particularly in the areas of ADAS and Autonomous Driving, the management and correct understanding of the interdependencies of integrated and distributed vehicle control systems is crucial for the development process. One significant challenge is to choose the right HEX-file for flashing to the vehicle's ECUs as it must functionally fit to all other ECUs on the network. This choice is made based on a considerable amount of information about the HEX-file, e.g. its specification and implementation status, the calibration parameters and their status, test results, etc. Typically, this information is distributed between OEM and suppliers, and spread across many systems throughout the development process. If this information is not readily available, it causes a lot of extra effort and bears the risk that wrong HEX-files are chosen. This may cause malfunction during vehicle test or lead to wrong test results.
 
The goal is therefore to systematically determine matching HEX-files of a complex E/E system and to link development artefacts to specific HEX-files.

 

Content of the Standard Development Project

The goal of HEX-File Management System is to enable engineers to correctly choose and distribute HEX-files for all control systems in a vehicle. This shall be achieved by a system which makes HEX-files, its sources (e.g. requirement documents, specifications, completed change request, etc.) and its results (e.g. measurement data files, review minutes, calibration data sets, etc.) accessible within a defined and standardized structure describing the vehicle development activities. The structure and data in it makes the HEX-file searchable and understandable. Typical information of the structure (e.g. [Car name]-[Car type]-[Power train type]-[Engine]) is exported from ALM/PLM tools. In addition, the standardized identification of HEX-files is also needed for the correct distribution. Identification means that information of the address (i.e. location of the HEX-file within the structure) is contained in the HEX-file.

 

The following four main topics will be specified in the new standard:

  • Interface specifications for external information acquisition
  • Interface specifications between HMS and calibration tool
  • Interface specification for parameter adaptation and progress management of entire HEX
  • HEX file identification information

 

It is planned to coordinate the topic "HEX file identification information" with AUTOSAR. The terminology of HEX-file management with relevant keywords will be defined as well and included in the standard specification.
