OpenSCENARIO Beyond Simulation - Application Methods for Field Testing

Besides simulations, real world field testing remains an essential part of the Validation of connected and automated vehicles (CAV). A major challenge for prospective validations will be the interoperability of both test environments. Especially, the transfer of test scenarios is a primary necessity, e.g. for testing CAV in field tests with already simulated scenarios or vice versa. OpenSCENARIO (OSC) is a predestined container for such applications. Actually, OSC is mainly utilized in simulated environments. Beyond that, we will present some practical implications and challenges adapting (simulated) OSC test scenarios for field testing on public roads. In particular, a concept will be introduced addressing the hardly predictable sequences in real world field tests with OSC in contrast to the usage of OSC for concrete sequences in simulations. This will reveal new approaches for applying OSC beyond Simulation but also imply the need for further development of OSC considering real world testing.
