Due to the growing number of ADAS in modern vehicles and the advent of autonomous driving, testing will massively increase. The only way to overcome this will be a parallelization of efforts. This cannot be achieved by physical testing alone.

Hence, virtual test environments need to be set up including all properties of real test environments. Therefore, it is essential to embed a virtual development process in the overall development process.

As a crucial part, the virtual prototype ideally “lives” from the very early architectural phases up to close-to-production Validation phases and beyond.

Necessary properties of an overall virtual development landscape are the following:

  • Vehicle (enhanced through various subsystem plant & sensor models)
  • Scenarios (i.e. static & dynamic environment)
  • Integration platform (for software/hardware components)
  • Driving simulators (e.g. HMI development)

Even though all of the above might be in place, it is not enough to run large-scale tests. For large numbers of deterministic scenarios, the virtual development needs to be moved to the cloud.

The presentation will give an overview of what such a virtual development landscape might look like and how it can be embedded in the overall development process.
